Q1:Hello Taku! We know you were born in Tokyo and graduated from the Department of Graphic Design at Tama Art University. Now you are an illustrator based in Japan. You have been active in a broad range of areas: collage works, advertisements, books, magazines, and artwork in the music field. Please share something more about yourself, like your childhood, career, interests, or anything about yourself.
A1:I have loved drawing ever since I was a kid. But it was when I started to go to the preparatory school for art universities that I came to draw in earnest. After I graduated from the Tama Art University, I went to the U.K. and spent several months drawing pictures. Then I came back to Japan and began to work as a CM comp writer at a production company. 8 years later, I started my career as an illustrator. The comic books I read when I was a kid, the music I listened to when I was a student, the movies I loved when I had little work to do yet, the work experiences at the production company and the travel experiences in the countries I visited… I think those are the important elements that have determined the motifs and the atmosphere of my current illustrations.
Q2: Could you walk us through your creating process? You seem to be used to using color pencils and papers. Why do you choose them as your main material? And please describe the space where you do most of your creation and you live.
A2 : Although there are several reasons why I have chosen collage (or paper-cut) as my style, the main reason is that it can give depth to the picture. When I arrange the paper in layers, I can tell the viewer the theme of the work by placing the element which I want to emphasize the most to the very front. As for color pencils, I use them as a means to convey subtle movements and emotions that can not be expressed by paper. I use a room in my house as my working space. But I need a larger space when I prepare for an exhibition, so the floor of not only that room but also the entire house end up to be covered with paper all over(laugh).
Q3: In the first place, you capture our everyday scenes lyrically. What specifically inspired you? Please give us some examples. Next, I am fascinated by the atmosphere you created, especially those paintings in which nature or vast space is the background. They make me feel peaceful but sometimes kind of sad and lonely. What do you try to convey through those paintings? Also, your works often depict an interaction between people or lone figures doing activities (maybe we could say it's an interaction between a person and the space? What do you think?), but we always can’t see people’s facial features and expressions in your works. Is there any other reason than to leave the viewer with imagination?
A3 : I usually get inspiration from movies, photos, or everyday scenery. Sometimes I find an image popping up into my mind by the lyrics or melody of the music I’m listening to. I don’t have any special messages that I want to convey through my works. A person who had seen my picture once said to me, “Depending on my physical condition or mood, the same picture may look happy or sad. I enjoy your picture freely with various viewpoints depending to the mood when I look at it.” I really appreciate her words and regard such pictures as my ideal. I put my own experiences or emotions into my pictures when I draw them, but I hope the viewers will overlap themselves with and interpret them freely. With the same reason, I don’t depict facial features and expressions of my characters. I would like to leave them to the viewers’ imagination.
Q4: You said, “In my work I’m a remote presence, simply observing what goes on.” Turely your minimalist style which is known to be unique having a blank space in your illustrations allows the viewer to imagine their own stories. What inspire you to create works in this way? How does your style have been developed? Would you share some artists influenced you and how they encouraged your work and your path as an artist?
A4 : I think I have looked at things objectively since I was young. Even at a lively place or a scene where you get excited with your friends, I feel like there is another me who is taking a step back. I cannot clearly explain why, but it might have something to do with my background. Most of those who get along with me are the same type of people. One of the things that influenced my work is STRANGER THAN PARADISE (1984) by Jim Jarmusch. I was shocked when I first saw it. We basically go to movies expecting something extraordinary, don’t we? But nothing happened in that movie. Watching the story just quietly going on in monochrome, I thought with excitement, “Wow, I never knew there’s such a way of expression.” The movie was based on the ordinary scenery and bland conversation in everyday life and developed with a chain of subtle emotions of the characters. And I think this style is similar to my pictures. There are many artists I was influenced by, but I would say it was Alex Katz who determined my direction. I saw his art book of collages at a bookstore and strongly thought “I want to express this atmosphere replacing with the present days.” My style at that time was quite similar to my current one, but I had been struggling over how I should set my standards. Looking at his work, I finally got it that it is alright to get rid of more elements.
